“…Oh drifter, I won't take much of your time…Move on drifter don't you bother me…”
Before she could think about it she had dashed down the stairs and into the living room where he was kneeling down and picking through a suitcase filled with his collection of old records.
"Where did you get that record?" she asked.
"Same place I got most of these," he answered. "This guy named Andy. He was a Jew. He had this record shop that specialized in oldies. His favorite slogan was 'if I don't have it, I can get it’.” He laughed. "Andy told me he was sorry to see me leave town."
"Why did you leave Chicago, Herschel?"
"You really want to know?" He stood up now and looked at her.
"I asked the question didn't I?"
"Then come sit down and let me tell you. It's something I've been wanting to tell you since the day I got here."
She did not move. Her feet were planted to the floor. She looked closely at him, more closely than she had done since he arrived and became a part of her household.
"Loretta," he said. "Never in my whole life have I wanted you like I want you right now. I want your love so bad I can taste it."
There was a time when hearing words like these from him would be like feeding on nectar from the gods. There should be bliss or ecstasy, at least some semblance of euphoria. There was none. The words had come too soon. They were premature, almost as though the lead character of a play had unwittingly spoken out of turn. Loretta was still mute. Ten long years. After a whole decade the words of a song from the early sixties should make no difference. If he was just an old friend who had dropped in on her out of the past there should be no more unpredictability here than the standard soap opera can permit within the banality of its own self-serving medium.
